Sample Databases

We will use a few sample, starter databases in the class. We will use the databases in lectures, homework assignments and exams. We will provide tutorials on how to install and configure the sample databases.

The first example databases are:

  • The sample database for the book Database Systems Concepts, Seventh Edition. The website associated with the book has the installation scripts.
  • Classic Models: This database is part of an online tutorial. We provide a copy of the create and load script You do not need to manually create a database. The database script creates a database named classicmodels and loads the data.
  • Lahmans Baseball Database: This dataset is a widely used sample database for analysis projects. We will provide load scripts.
  • IMDB: This dataset is a subset of the information available at the IMDB website. We will provide load scripts.

Non-Programming Data Engineering Project

The non-programming track's project will be a simple data engineering and visualization project. The examples/process_got folder in the course repository is a simple example of some of the tasks. The professor and TAs will expand this example to form the template for the non-programming track project.
